General Anesthesia for Dental Treatment

General Anesthesia for Dental Treatment
Providing required dental treatment to adults with uncooperative behavior because of varying degrees of developmental delay continues to be a challenge for the dental profession.
Dental care provided under general anesthesia continues to be an important means by which their behavior can be predictably managed.

Studies have shown that approximately 5% of persons with disabilities will require dental care under general anesthesia to manage their behavior appropriately so that optimal dental care can be provided.
However, the majority of studies have focused on the delivery of dental care under general anesthesia to children with disabilities and have determined this to be a safe method for delivery of the care.
In contrast, there are very few studies regarding the use of general anesthesia to deliver dental care to adults with disabilities.

The use of general anesthesia to manage uncooperative behavior or severe anxiety in dental patients has been determined to be a safe practice, with a very low rate of morbidity and mortality, whether performed in an office or in a hospital setting.
However, most data have been based on studies conducted on the pediatric population.
