Gargling with glucose mouth rinse increases self-control
The participants were divided into two groups and rinsed their mouths with lemonade sweetened with either glucose or Splenda, an artificial sweetener. Simultaneously, they had to perform the Stroop test, a psychological test in which words are displayed in a color different from the color they actually name (i.e. the word "green" written in the color red). The words were presented on a computer screen and the participants responded by pressing labeled keys.

Usually, people have difficulty identifying the color, as they read the word more quickly and automatically. Naming the color in a predetermined time thus requires self-control. In the present study, the researchers found that participants who rinsed with glucose-sweetened lemonade were faster than controls in identifying the colors correctly.

As the participants did not swallow the liquids, the findings provide further support for the hypothesis that glucose moderates self-control nonmetabolically, according to the researchers. They speculate that glucose activates brain areas involved in selecting and inhibiting action, as well as detecting errors and evaluating competing responses.

"After this trial, it seems that glucose stimulates the simple carbohydrate sensors on the tongue. This, in turn, signals the motivational centers of the brain where our self-related goals are represented. These signals tell your body to pay attention and perform better at evoking the nondominant response," said Leonard Martin, co-author and professor of psychology at the University of Georgia's Department of Psychology.
