What are inlays and onlays?
Dental inlays and onlays are bigger than a filling and smaller than a crown. They are used to restore the appearance of a damaged tooth. They are bonded or cemented into place.

Inlays are similar to a filling, but they lie within the cusps on the chewing surface of your tooth. Onlays are larger than inlays. They are used to cover one or more cusps.

Inlays or onlays can be made of gold, composite resin or ceramics. They can last for decades. How long they last depends on:

- the material used
- the teeth involved
- the forces of chewing

What are they used for?

Inlays and onlays are used to restore a damaged or decayed tooth.

Before the procedure, the tooth and surrounding area will be numbed with local anesthesia. Then the dentist will shape the tooth in order to apply inlays and onlays.

After the inlays and onlays are applied, you can brush your restored teeth the same way you brush your natural teeth.

It is essential that you visit your dentist for regular check – ups.
