What is gingivitis?

Reset Decrease Increase
Gingivitis is usually caused by a sticky film of bacteria, known as plaque. Plaque constantly forms on your teeth.

If plaque is not removed with proper daily flossing and brushing, gums can become irritated and inflamed and may even bleed.

The irritated gum tissue can separate from the teeth and form spaces called pockets.

Left untreated, the process can continue until the bone and other tooth supporting tissues are destroyed.

Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease and can affect the overall health of your body.

Fortunately, this early stage of periodontal disease is usually reversible.

Therapy may consist of additionally cleanings and follow up evaluations and an increased at home care.
