What is bone augmentation?

Reset Decrease Increase
When your jawbone has receded or lost its shape, the dentist can often augment it to replace missing bone and help new bone to grow.
Depending where the bone loss has occurred, the dentist will select the appropriate procedure that can include:

- sinus grafts
- bone grafts
- ridge preservation

A sinus graft thickness the walls of the bone that form the upper jaw bone and the floor of the sinus.
Bone grafting replaces the height and width of the jaw where bone tissues have receded.
Ridge preservation fills the empty socket of an extracted tooth. For all of these procedures, the dentist will first prepare the replacement material, which may be your own bone or bone from another source.
Then, the dentist makes sure that the area is thoroughly numbed.

In the sinus graft, the dentist opens a small window in the sinus area, above the missing tooth and then place bone grafting material on the floor of the sinus.
In the bone grafting procedure, the dentist will first gently open the gums and place grafting material onto the areas where the jawbone has receded.

With ridge preservation technique, the dentist fills the empty socket with bone material after the tooth has been removed.
Depending on the situation, the dentist may also apply platelet rich plasma to the site.
This material is made from a small sample of your own blood. This is used to enhance bone growth and speed the healing process.

The dentist may also place a special membrane over the graft to prevent unwanted tissue from growing into the graft site.
The last step is to close the grafting site.
No matter the procedure, you’ll have to wait several months for the bone to heal.

A bone augmentation procedure has several benefits:
- it can recreate a healthy jaw bone
- it can provide a solid anchor for the dental implants
- form an attractively shaped foundation for gums
- it helps you preserve your healthy and beautiful smile
